Difference of gantry crane and overhead is the girders are attached to the leg of gantry so it can run without runway beams and columns. It takes a ladder and handrails connected to at least one of its legs to climb to the top of the gantry or girder. Overhead Cranes are more widely used in indoor areas or inside buildings. While gantry cranes are more widely used in outdoor areas or outside buildings. For the hoists that are used for outdoor areas, they usually use a cover or a weather protection.
