Difference of Gantry Crane and Overhead Crane.

Difference of gantry crane and overhead is the girders are attached to the leg of gantry so it can run without runway beams and columns. It takes a ladder and handrails connected to at least one of its legs to climb to the top of the gantry or girder. Overhead Cranes are more widely used in indoor areas or inside buildings. While gantry cranes are more widely used in outdoor areas or outside buildings. For the hoists that are used for outdoor areas, they usually use a cover or a weather protection.

What is Hoist Crane ?

It is a lifting equipment which consists of hoist, trolley and end carriages. Hoist functions for lifting and lowering the load. The trolley can move along the girder. End carriages function for travelling the bridge along the runway.

This equipment can be operated manually and using an electric motor. For a manual crane type a special designs and materials are required to produce a lightweight construction to make it easier to operate. Electric cranes can be made with very large capacities and are widely used in the steel industry, construction and power plant.

Chain hoist or wire rope ? Of course, it has occurred to us when we are required to choose one of the two types of hoists that are widely available on the market. There are several fundamental differences that we can use as a reference in choosing the type of hoist that suits our needs.

Electric Chain Hoist.

This type is very effective to used in workshops, factories, small workshops and as standby maintenance cranes at water treatment stations. As its name, it uses a chain that can move up and down.

The disadvantages:

Relatively smaller lifting capacity.
Lifting height is limited, or shorter than the wire rope type.
Lower lifting speed.
Duty Class is more limited.

The advantages:

The price is cheaper than a wire rope hoist.
Able to use a manual trolley type.
The shape and its size is more compact than a wire rope hoist.

Wire Rope Hoist and Chain Hoist.

Wire rope hoist or chain hoist ? Of course, we have thought about this when we are required to choose one of the two types of hoists that are widely available on the market. Although both are used to lift goods, there are some differences for our references in choosing the type of hoist that suits to our needs. The following are the differences, advantages and the drawback of wire rope hoists and chain hoists.

Wire Rope Hoist

We often find this type in the manufacturing, warehousing, construction, power plant and mining industries. This hoist uses a wire rope (sling) that is attached to a drum connected to a motor and gearbox so that it able to rotate and move the load up and down. To hold the load to stays hanging at a certain height, brakes are used which will function when the power supply to the hoist motor is off or cut off.

Wire rope hoists are generally produced with standard capacities from 1 ton to 80 tonnes. A special design is required to make a hoist with a capacity above 80 tons in order to get the hoist specifications that match with our need. This type consists of stationary, monorail, and double girder hoists. Monorail hoists are generally produced with a capacity under 15 tons while double girder types are made up to 250 tons or more.

Compared with a chain hoist, the wire rope hoist is relatively better when used in a large area and requires an equipment that will be used frequently. This is possible because this type can be produced from Light, Medium, Heavy and Very Heavy Duty Class. Compared with the chain hoist which is generally limited to Light Duty. The classification of hoist is based on the FEM / ISO Class which is determined based on the frequency of routine use in a day, as well as the average weight of the load that lifted when compared to the maximum lifting capacity.

With its various advantages, it turns out that the wire rope hoist also has disadvantages when compared to chain hoist. Here are the drawbacks:

With a more complex system, the price will be more expensive.
Not effective when using a manual trolley.
Requires a power source or electricity.
The size is relatively bigger than the chain hoist.

Chain Hoist

Chain hoists are very effective used in workshops, factories, small workshops and as standby maintenance cranes at water treatment stations. This type uses a chain that able to move up and down manually or with an electric motor. Because it can be operated manually, chain hoists are widely used in areas where there is no power or electrical source. In manual hoist, its compact shape makes it easy for us to move it from one place to another.

The drawbacks of a chain hoist are:

Relatively has smaller lifting capacity.
The lifting height is limited, or shorter than the wire rope type.
Lower lifting speed.

Crane Hoist Types

There are several types of cranes hoists that are commonly used in industry, they are overhead cranes, gantry cranes, jib cranes and monorail hoists. Let’s describe the types of cranes mentioned above.

Crane Hoist Types:

1. Overhead Travelling Crane.

Overhead travelling cranes consist of hoist & trolley, girders, end carriages, rails, runway beams, electrical, panels and control systems. If using one main girder, it is called single girder overhead travelling crane and if it uses two girders, it is called double girder overhead travelling crane. Often called as a bridge crane, this equipment is the type of crane most used in workshops, warehouses, power plants and factories. Overhead travelling crane is designed by utilizing building construction and it can run along runway rails which installed above the structures or columns of the building. This type of crane can be designed to service and covering almost the entire area below which can be reached by the hoist that moves along the girder.

What if we want to install an overhead travelling crane on a building whose construction was not designed to be able to withstand the weight to be lifted and with the weight of the crane itself? What’s the solution? We can do it by strengthening the existing columns, by adding additional columns to the building which is connected with the support of steel profile so that the construction becomes stronger and a runway beam can be installed on it. If this is not possible, then we can build a new structure that is separate from the construction of the building called the free-standing structure. This structure is designed to be able to withstand the maximum load that will occur so that overhead travelling cranes can run on it.

2. Gantry Crane.

Gantry / Semi Gantry Crane is a crane stands on the gantry’s leg. The girder construction is connected to the gantry leg which is equipped with end carriages so it can run on rails without additional structures such as runway beams and columns. As well as overhead cranes, this type of cranes can be designed using double girder or single girder. Gantry cranes are widely used for outdoor areas because it does not require additional structures. In some buildings where the construction is not strong enough to be installed overhead travelling cranes, as an alternative choice we can use gantry cranes inside the building.

3. Jib Crane.

For small areas and the load is not too heavy then we can use a jib crane. Jib cranes can be installed on the floor or by utilizing building columns. By using a jib crane we can transport material in a half circle (180 degrees) or a full circle (360 degrees). In some standard applications, this type of crane can be a relatively cheaper solution compared to the other types.

4. Monorail Hoist.

Monorail can move in two directions, up/down and move along the monorail beam. A monorail is very effective to use if it is designed according to the factory layout. Monorail beams can be adjusted to the area and turn in radius using a special trolley that can rotate following the monorail track. This allows us to create an endless path or a continuous monorail system.

That is a little description of hoist crane types commonly used in industry. Of course, each type of crane has advantages and disadvantages that needs to be adjusted to your needs in the field.

The Difference of Hoist, Monorail and Crane

When we discussing the crane, we must be wondering about the difference between hoist, monorail and crane. All three are interconnected, one with another. Generally, a crane can be interpreted as a device or a machine that functions to move goods that are able to move on three axes X, Y, Z. While the hoist and monorail are part of the crane system. For more details, let’s discuss and describe one by one about it.

Hoist

A hoist is one of the parts/components of the crane that functions to move up/down. Based on the mechanism and how it works, this equipment has four types, namely manual, hydraulic, pneumatic and electric hoist. The keyword is “up/down”.

Monorail

The monorail is a device that can make two movements, vertically (up/down) on the X-axis and moves horizontally along the monorail beam. if an additional trolley is installed on the hoist so that it can move horizontally, it is called a monorail hoist. Monorail beams can be adjusted to the area and turn in radius using a special trolley that can rotate following the monorail track. This allows us to create an endless path or a continuous monorail system. A monorail is widely used to move goods in narrow areas and in production areas that require continuous processes such as in the painting area. The keyword is “two movements”.

Crane

As discussed earlier, cranes can make a minimum of three movements. A crane can move up/down (hoisting), right/left (crossing) and forward/backwards (traversing) or rotating in a radius on the X-axis. The crane has a hoist and trolley so that it can move up/down and move to the right/left along the girder like in an overhead travelling crane, or moving along a boom like in a jib crane. For the crane to be able to move forward/backwards, a pair of saddle or end carriages are added so that the crane can move along the runway. There is a pair of bearings on the jib crane, added between the pillar and the boom so the crane can rotate up to 360 degrees.

So in conclusion, the three objects have differences in their ability to make movements. Each can be used independently or integrated into a system so that its capabilities are increased. Which one will we choose? of course the most appropriate with the needs in the field. That is a little description regarding the hoist, monorail and crane. Hopefully, may be useful.
